After trying to fool my brain last week that I was someplace magical and warm, reality kicked back in and it’s cold. Yep, still just a little over 2 months of winter to slog through. You know what helps? Warm cocktails on sunny mornings. Better yet, when you’re enjoying one of the Hot Buttered Rums, people may think you’re enjoying a chai tea. This drink is smooth and smells magical, thanks to cinnamon, orange, and brown sugar. It comes together very quickly and thanks to the butter, you won’t feel like you're drinking booze in the morning. So, kick back, grab a book and a blanket, and enjoy this winter cocktail on this Hot Buttered Rum Day.
Hot Buttered Rum
¼ cup light brown sugar
Cinnamon sticks
~3-inch long slice of orange rind
2 cups of water
Butter, at room temperature
3 oz Diplomatico or other dark rum
In a pot, combine the brown sugar, 1 cinnamon stick (broken into 2 pieces), orange rind, a pinch of salt and water and bring to a boil. Stir to ensure the brown sugar is fully dissolved. Cover the pot and set aside.
While the water steeps, add 1.5 tsp of butter into a mug, along with 1.5 oz of rum. Using a ladle, pour the steeped water into the mug and stir until the butter is fully melted and incorporated.
Throw in a fresh cinnamon stick to the mug (optional) and serve.
